Lancaster County Clerk of Court

The Lancaster County Clerk of Court is Mike Watkins. Lancaster County uses a unified Clerk of Court office rather than a split local clerk structure. The office supports Criminal Court, Civil Court, and Family Court divisions for South Carolina Circuit and Family Court records in Lancaster County.

Lancaster County Clerk Court Divisions

The Clerk provides administrative support to three court divisions. Lancaster County Clerk Records Online

For Circuit Court case records, the official route begins with the South Carolina Judicial Branch case records search and the Lancaster County Public Index link. The state identifies Lancaster as Circuit 6, County 29. Automated inspection of the Public Index was blocked during research, so the page should not claim unverified search fields. Browser users may need cookies, JavaScript, and pop-up permissions for publicindex.sccourts.org.

Family Court records use a separate public portal linked by official sources. The official South Carolina Family Court page describes Family Court jurisdiction over divorce, custody, visitation, adoption, support, alimony, marital property, name changes, and many juvenile matters.

Request Lancaster County Clerk Copies

A certified copy is usually needed when a court document must prove the official terms of a judgment, sentence, decree, or order. Online docket screens may help find a case, but they are not a certified copy from the Clerk. The research did not locate a public Lancaster Clerk fee table for plain copies, certified copies, or certification fees, so requesters should confirm cost and payment method before mailing payment.

1. Identify the case type: Criminal, Civil, or Family Court.
2. Search the Public Index or Family Court portal when available, but do not invent a case number if the portal fails.
3. Call Criminal/Civil at 803-285-1581 or Family Court at 803-285-6961 for copy and certification instructions.
4. Provide party names, case number if known, document type, copy type, and delivery method.
5. Confirm the fee, payment method, and whether the copy can be mailed before sending funds.

Note: Probate fee schedules should not be applied to Circuit Court, Common Pleas, General Sessions, or Family Court copy requests.

Lancaster County Records Request Fields

Court records may be governed by court rules and Clerk procedures, so the Clerk remains the first contact for case copies. Lancaster County Clerk Access Limits

South Carolina's Freedom of Information Act applies to public bodies and nonexempt public records, but court files can also be affected by court rules, sealing orders, redactions, and case-specific confidentiality. The South Carolina Freedom of Information Act includes inspection duties and exemptions, including privacy-sensitive material and records protected by other law.

Expunged and sealed records are also limited. South Carolina law directs clerks to send expungement-process inquiries to the corresponding solicitor's office, and Lancaster County is served by the Sixth Circuit Solicitor. Public records may redact Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, minor identifying information, protected addresses, and other exempt details.

Lancaster County Divorce Decrees

Divorce decrees are Family Court records handled through the Clerk of Court, not Probate Court and not the state marriage certificate process. DPH can issue a divorce report, but DPH states that actual divorce decrees must be obtained from the Clerk of Court in the county where the divorce was filed or granted.

Records the Clerk Does Not Handle
